Conference Description
The International Forum for Communication Law and Ethics will celebrate its 2017 edition as an IAMCR pre-conference (after successful experiences in 2015 and 2016) organized together with IAMCR’s Law Section. Under the title “Cross-border Journalism and Human Dignity” the pre-conference seeks proposals that explore the role of communication law and ethics in the protection of human dignity, particularly in relation to information activities in cross-border settings, both in neighboring countries as well as countries and organizations with influence in the internal affairs of other nations. The best works presented at the conference will be part of a conference eBook published through Complutense University’s E-Prints Complutense.

Call for Proposal
IAMCR’s Law Section, the International Forum on Communication Law and Ethics (FIÉDI) and Colombia’s Universidad de la Sabana invite all academics interested in Communication Law and Ethics to submit proposals for the IAMCR 2017 pre-conference: Cross-Border Journalism and Human Dignity that will take place as part of IAMCR 2017 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia on July 15, 2017. The deadline for submissions is March 15, 2017.
Under the theme of this pre-conference we seek to explore and encourage the presentation of abstracts for works that deal with anything related to the role of Communication Law and Ethics in the protection of human dignity, particularly in relation to journalism activity in a cross-border setting, between neighboring countries or countries that influence the internal affairs of other nations.
For example, and without excluding any other topic related to Communication Law and Ethics, we seek proposals that explore topics such as coverage of migration and refugee crises and other displaced collectives and migrant rights. Also, peace processes like the one in and by extension the analysis of topics such as citizen participation, referendums and political campaigns with consequences that go beyond national borders such as Brexit in the UK or the most recent United States election. Also issues related to tech companies, media, and the use of both technology and media by governments when those issues go beyond the borders of their countries of origin and other problems related to technology like drones and human dignity, the need to protect the privacy of citizens even beyond the borders of a country, the effects of algorithms in democratic life in one or more countries or the relations between media, technology and migrant rights, the distribution of news over social networks and the role and influence of the distribution of propaganda and so called fake news in electoral processes that have implications that go beyond national borders, hacking intrusion in electoral processes, etc.
We also welcome the submission of proposals of any other topic that may be related to Communication Law and Ethics, from any theoretical or methodological approach, as long as it is relevant.
The fact that IAMCR will be celebrated in a Spanish-speaking country is an excellent opportunity for the International Forum of Communication Law and Ethics (FIÉDI) to reconnect with its origins as the new iteration of the CIÉDI conferences, very well known in Spain and Latin America. For this edition, we wish to extent a very special invitation to all those professors and academics that have taken part in previous editions celebrated in countries like Spain, Mexico or Chile. This is a great opportunity to present your work as well as reconnecting with friends and colleagues that were also present in previous editions. We also wish to encourage young and emerging scholars to participate in this pre-conference.
The pre-conference follows the steps of the 11th CIÉDI, held as an IAMCR pre-conference in Montreal, Canada in 2015 and that paved the way for the first FIÉDI, held as an IAMCR pre-conference in the summer of 2016 in Leicester, UK. In total, the Board of Directors of these international conferences has been organizing them for over 13 years. The President of the Board is Dr. Ignacio Bel, from Spain, joined by Dr. Loreto Corredoira, also from Spain and Dr. Marisa Aguirre, from Peru, all members of the board of the former CIEDI, who are now joined by Drs. Rodrigo Cetina Presuel (USA) and Fernando Gutierrez Atala (Chile) as Executive Directors with the addition of Dr. Marta del Rio, also as Executive Director and representing Universidad de la Sabana in Colombia, as the local organizing committee.
The 2015 pre-conference resulted in a book, in both English and Spanish, Media and Journalists in the Age of Open Government and Transparency and the 2016 pre-conference resulted in another more recent book Communication: Right or Duty. Both books have been published through UCM ePrints from Complutense University in Madrid and with the support of the Latin Cyberlaw Clinic which is part of the Communication School of the same University. Below you can find information about the book planned for the 2017 edition that will be supported by the aforementioned institutions as well as distribution support from Red Derecho TICs in Spain and Universidad de la Sabana in Colombia.
