The Political Communication Section invites submissions for the IAMCR conference to be held in Cartagena/Colombia from 16 until 20 July 2017. Papers should refer to the general conference theme “Transforming Culture, Politics & Communication: New media, new territories, new discourses” or the general interests of the section.

The section focuses on the interplay and interdependencies of media and politics. Papers are welcome that deal with political socialization, political campaigning, public opinion and political participation and interactions between the media and intermediary organizations such as interest groups and political parties. Studies of the uses of the media in campaigns and elections as well as in political marketing processes in government and the role that media play in formal and informal forms of governance are of interest. Comparative research across countries is strongly encouraged.

We encourage the submission of individual papers or complete panel proposals in any of the three official association languages (English, French, Spanish).

Individuals may submit 1 abstract (paper) per Section or Working Group as lead author, and a maximum of 2 abstracts (papers) to a single IAMCR conference in general. Presenters are expected to bring fully developed work to the conference. Prior to the conference, it is expected that a completed paper will be submitted to the Section and Session Chairs.

Abstracts should be between 250 and 500 words, and should

• have a clear title
• include the name(s) of author(s) and professional title(s) (i.e. professor, postdoctoral fellow, independent
• researcher, graduate student, student, etc.)
• outline the research objectives/questions/hypotheses
• outline the theoretical framework and methodology if relevant
• make clear the main argument proposed and summarize the findings.

Bibliographies and author profiles are not required.

In the interest of scientific discussion and interaction, the section expects authors of accepted papers to participate in the conference in person and present the papers themselves. Paper presentations by others than the authors will not be accepted.

The Political Communication Research Section encourages its members to take part in chairing sessions. The OCS system will open on December 1, 2016, and will close on February 9, 2017. Please note that this deadline will not be extended. Early submission is strongly encouraged. Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to individual applicants by the section chairs no later than April 3, 2017. The deadline for full paper submission is June 26, 2017.

Languages

This Section accepts abstract submissions and presentations in English, French and Spanish.

Submission of Abstracts

Abstracts should be submitted via the IAMCR Open Conference System at http://iamcr-ocs.org from 1 December 2016 – 9 February 2017. Both individual and panel submissions are welcome. Early submission is strongly encouraged.

Deadlines

The deadline for submission of abstracts is 9 February 2017. Please note that this deadline will not be extended.

Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to applicants by their Section or Working Group Head no later than 3 April 2017.

For those whose abstracts are accepted, full conference papers are to be submitted by 26 June.

Guidelines for Abstracts

Unless otherwise stated by a Section or Working Group, abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words in length.

All abstract submissions must be made via IAMCR Open Conference System at http://iamcr-ocs.org. There are to be no email submissions of abstracts addressed to any Section or Working Group Head.

It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same author either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to more than one Section or Working Group. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be rejected by the OCS system, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Authors submitting them risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.

Technical guidelines, if any, are defined by the individual Sections and Working Groups. If you have questions, consult the Section or Working Group’s specific CfP or contact the head of the Section and Working Group that interests you.

Criteria for Evaluation

Submitted abstracts will generally be evaluated on the basis of:

• theoretical contribution
• methods
• quality of writing
• literature review
• relevance of the submission to the work of the Section or Working Group
• originality and/or significance

Sections and Working Groups may use additional criteria and may assign different weights to the above criteria. Consult the specific CfP or contact the head of the Section and Working Group you want to submit to if you have questions.
