Comic Art Working Group
Grupo de trabajo sobre el Cómic – Convocatoria en español
It is our pleasure to inform you that the Comic Art Working Group of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for the 2017 IAMCR conference to be held from 16 -20 July, 2017 in Cartagena, Colombia.
The Comic Art Working Group (CAWG) is most probably the oldest working group in IAMCR, having been founded by John A. Lent at the 1984 conference in Prague. From its launch, it has been dedicated to finding a niche within mass communication scholarship for comic art, which it has succeeded in doing, and in a spirit of serious and pleasurable study and cooperation. Professor John A. Lent is also responsible for the International Journal of Comic Art (IJOCA), one of most prestigious journals in the field.
All aspects of comics and cartooning from around the world are open for discussion as well as critical approaches from all disciplinary perspectives. Academicand independent scholars are all equally welcome to collaborate. We also welcome submissions from early career researchers and veteran scholars alike.
The CAWG also welcomes suggestions and ideas of extra activities within the group for future meetings. Beginning with the Leicester 2016 conference, the group announced the launching of the annual best paper award. In order to be considered, papers must be thoroughly researched, written in or translated into excellent English and follow closely the International Journal of Comic Art style ( for style guidelines, please check ijoca.com or the IJOCA blog).
In order to keep the dialogue flowing, we have also created a page for the group in Facebook.
Feel free to join it! https://www.facebook.com/groups/588358041302782/?fref=ts

2017 IAMCR Conference theme is “Transforming Culture, Politics & Communication: New media, new territories, new discourses”. All over the world communication and media are being transformed by complex and often unpredictable dynamics, tendencies and trends.
Across an increasing number of regions, established social and political actors are being challenged and new movements are emerging, defined, for example, by sexual preferences, lifestyles, ethnic identities, customs, practices or interests. These new actors are more likely to see “politics” as spaces of multiple modes of participation rather than as spaces where they are represented. Contemporary politics (especially political parties) are being transformed and new social movements are emerging and growing, taking various forms, sizes, and shapes.
Against this backdrop, the conference will explore and discuss the link between, on the one hand, broad social, political and cultural changes and dynamics, and on the other, changes in communication, media, and their processes. In particular, the conference will be an opportunity to incubate and develop theories, research, and frameworks, that might guide emerging theoretical frameworks to help think about, discuss and create new, and hopefully more appropriate, concepts and methods for the field and its practices.
A key focus will be the new social and spatial territories of the political, their social and cultural effects, and the dramatic transformations they have produced in communication processes.
Given the epochal changes underway globally, is it time to rethink communication and relocate it, with all of its nuances, within a new understanding of politics and culture that speaks to the times we now live in?
At the same time, the outdated geopolitical idea of a north/south, east/west world that dominated thinking in the 20th century also needs to be revisited. The conditions of social and cultural life that generated these conceptualizations are no longer linked to territories. Today “souths” and “norths” (in the conventional sense), mingle and interact with centers and peripheries, and easts and wests, throughout the world.
Languages
This Working Group accepts abstract submissions and presentations in English, French and Spanish.
See this CfP in Spanish.
Submission of Abstracts
Submissions to the CAWG might focus on relevant aspects to the comics scholarship. Questions raised might include (but not be limited to): comics as “new media”; cultural aspects of the discourse of comics; national narratives build and or represented in comics; graphic art as a cultural agent; comics festivals and the “new territories of culture”; the question of territory in contemporary visual representation; digital media and comics; representation (trans)forming cultural memory, comics and new identity discourses; comic art and pop culture.
Guidelines
Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words in length.
All abstract submissions must be made exclusively via IAMCR’s OCS at http://iamcr-ocs.org.
One (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. Under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors.
Upon submission of an abstract, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is original and that it has not been previously published in the form presented. You will also be given an opportunity to declare if your submission is currently before another conference for consideration.
Submitted abstracts will be evaluated on the basis of:
1. relevance of the submission to the CAWG
2. theoretical contribution
3. methods
4. quality of writing
5. literature review
6. originality and/or significance of the work
Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association for consideration, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.
Early submission is strongly encouraged.
